Jody King Boothbay Harbor, Maine Although I have considered myself an artist all my life, it was when I turned fifty that the energy really began to flow freely. Content to show watercolors, ink block prints and line drawings at the community gallery in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, I have been preoccupied with children, jobs, bills. All tend to encumber the necessary stillness it takes for creativity. Now I understand that art is so essentially a part of me that I see it manifesting through various expression…… music, writing, working, cooking, dancing, living, loving, being……. It is that song I feel inside. Today I am more relaxed about how my art is expressed. Most of my work portrays or honors the female form. I have always been fascinated by the ancient artifacts and petroglyphs, telling images of lost cultures and distant ancestors. Of particular interest is an exquisite figure found in the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni, a long buried temple, on the island of Malta. She is known as the "Sleeping Lady" or "Dreaming Goddess". I started painting her image and in time she became three dimensional. I believe her image has opened me to paying attention to my own dreams. I often wake up with the idea of another project. As a result I am allowing my dreams to direct me. I believe that the feminine images support my feeling of balance in the universe. Some of these images are soft and nurturing but many of them evoke a sense of strength and empowerment. My hope is to contribute to restoring positive feminine energy, as well as to suggest a reverence for feminine energy, in a world which is dominated by patriarchal influence. I was drawn to the drum for meditation purposes and studied shamanic drumming technique which is a continuous and monotonous rhythm promoting a trance state. Eventually I found my way into a local drum circle studying ancient African rhythms. I have been very fortunate to have studied with various members of INANNA, a women's percussion group here in Maine; Judy Nielson, Annagret Baier, Shirsten Lumblad, and more recently with Layne Redmond, world renowned percussionist. Hence drumming has become another form of creative expression, connecting me with all that is.
