Jody King Boothbay Harbor and Washington, Maine Over the last few years, I have been studying astrology. It has effected my perception of life and certainly my art. It was during my Chiron Return that my creative energy really began to flow freely. Before that, I had been content to show occasional watercolors, ink block prints and line drawings at the Community Art Foundation in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Preoccupied with children and a full-time job, I had little time for the necessary stillness required to create art on a consistent basis. Today, I have a greater understanding and acceptance about how I define creative expression. I understand that art is so essentially a part of me; I see it manifest through every aspect of my life…… music, writing, cooking, dancing, living, loving, being……. It is that song I feel inside. There have been many twists and turns in my creative path as I follow my intuition and my dreams (well supported with Uranus placed in my 5th House on my own birth chart). I benefit greatly from visual support in order to comprehend the complexity of the planets and their movements. I often dream about planets and their various relationships as they appear on a birth chart or as they transit the sky. One night I dreamed the Sky Scrolls, down to the detail of how to craft them, and believe that I am being guided to offer them to others who might also benefit from a visual explanation of their own natal chart. It's been a very exciting venture for me and I am grateful for my dreams, my guidance, my teacher, and my friends who have allowed me to look into their sky as I continue to learn this sacred art. My hope is to encourage, comfort, empower and, if appropriate, provoke an awareness about the mystery of the sky at the moment of birth. It tells a story. It offers a key to understanding purpose on a soul level. I really love the roundness of the birth chart and I consider each person when I paint the center image of their chart. My intention is to create a visual affirmation/meditation in each astrological mandala, representing the story. I am always pleased when people participate in the process of determining the center image. Often a childhood story will lead to the myth which will determine the centerpiece. When in doubt, I refer to my dreams before painting it. In regards to drumming, I was drawn to the drum for meditation purposes and studied shamanic drumming technique which is a continuous and monotonous beat, a gateway to trance. Eventually I found my way into a local drum circle studying ancient African rhythms, also very trance-inducing. I have been very fortunate to have studied with various members of INANNA, a women's percussion group here in Maine; Judy Nielson, Annagret Baier, and Shirsten Lumblad, Lizzy Derector. Hence drumming has become another form of creative expression, connecting me with all that is. When I discovered big, beautiful 30" wide frame drums coming out of Pakistan, I couldn't resist placing powerful archetypal images onto them for shamanic drumming purpose. The sound from these drums is something you feel in your belly. My hope is that you will find these drums meditative on or off the wall.
